Nautilus International

Campaigning for seafarer internet access

Maritime professionals’ trade union, Nautilus International, supports and campaigns on behalf of 22,000 seafarers across the UK, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

As a maritime PR agency, we were briefed to launch its Crew Connectivity Campaign – which sought to provide internet access for seafarers, following the UK government’s announcement that it should be a basic right.

The trade union wanted seafarers to have the same offshore experience as their onshore counterparts.

To ensure maximum exposure for the campaign, we worked with the union and satellite company, Inmarsat, to produce a whitepaper, An Investigation into Connectivity at Sea, calling on the UK government and industry to provide internet access for seafarers.

Results

Our integrated campaign encompassed media relations, social media management, political lobbying in coastal constituencies and thought leadership. We launched the whitepaper to the industry at the Sea Trade Awards, then to consumers the following week for Seafarers Awareness Week.

  • 100,000+ people in key constituencies engaged with whitepaper on social media
  • 430,000 opportunities to see across Seafarers Awareness Week
  • For every £1 spent that week, 1,000 people reached via media coverage alone
